Under One Sky

In 2002, the Nevada State Museum mounted an extraordinary, groundbreaking exhibit on the history and culture of Nevada's Indian people. Entitled Under One Sky, the exhibit is the product of close collaboration between museum professionals and tribal representatives, and it incorporates a number of short audio and video works produced by the UNOHP. In enhanced form, and including some important additions and refinements, we now offer these collected elements in an interactive video of the same name as the exhibit.
As told by Northern Paiute, Western Shoshone, and Washoe people, Under One Sky presents "Origin Stories," "Life Ways," and memories of experiences at the Stewart Indian School in Carson City. "Origin Stories" explains the people's presence on the land and their relationship to it, while "Life Ways" illustrates some important changes that have occurred since non-Indian settlers first penetrated traditional Indian territories. These vignettes were filmed on site in spectacular Great Basin locales and on the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada. They incorporate historical photographs and footage from vintage home movies. Traditional tribal songs enrich the sound track, and English subtitles are provided for passages that are spoken in native tongues.
Produced in association with the university's Teaching and Learning Technologies department, Under One Sky is the fourth in a series of UNOHP documentaries on Nevada Indian life. It is the winner of the Oral History Association's 2003 Non-Print Media Award and the 2002 Communicator Award of Excellence. The work was supported by the Nevada State Museum, with additional funding provided by the Sven and Astrid Liljeblad Endowment Fund.

Under One Sky. Reno: UNOHP, 2006. Runtime of 60 minutes, available in DVD or VHS formats.
