Mining

For almost 150 years, mining has played an important role in Nevada's economy and in the lifestyles of its residents. Many of the towns throughout the state were founded around mines and mills, and the industry continues to impact Nevada to the present day, whether through investment and employment booms and busts or environmental and safety statutes. From individually owned claims to corporate enterprises, from the self-taught tramp miner to the engineering graduates from the Mackay School of Mines at the University of Nevada, Reno, the characters and businesses involved in the state have influenced how residents see themselves and how they are perceived by those outside of Nevada. The four components in this module explore mining from a number of topical perspectives:
